sew & tell v3.37 - leedle deedle's here!

Hi everyone!  Summer is in full swing over here and I haven't sewn anything since I got back from vacation.  I've been too busy working on some other non-sewing projects.  My driveway is currently full of primed furniture.

I want to encourage any of you who are on instagram or twitter to share pictures or your blog link there and label it #sewntell!  You can do this any time, it doesn't have to be on Friday! I think we can share this way for the summer months and I'll just do a link up once a month.  The last Friday in July and August.  Then we can start back up with our weekly link ups after Labor Day when school is in and everyone's routines become a bit more normal.  You can also post pictures on my facebook wall!

I had spaced sew & tell for today until Leigh of Leedle Deedle Quilts emailed me late last night asking if I needed something today for sew & tell!! She's a great friend for thinking ahead for me.  And i just love this quilt she made!

*****
Wahoo! I'm so excited that I finished something, I'm over here sharing it with you for Sew and Tell!

This rainbow chevron quilt has been in my head for a few years now. I finally finished it last weekend! I was originally inspired by this mugrug. As soon as I saw it, I had this idea for a quilt. (My original post on the quilt top is here.)

Here is the back. I got the idea from this quilt by Crazy Mom Quilts. I love it!

The full post for this quilt is over on my blog, if you'd like to see it. I also have a tutorial for a twin sized version of this quilt.

Thanks Amy, for having me :)

Leigh, thanks so much!  You were a lifesaver today!

sew and tell v3.30

Amy is not here today, she needed a break after forgetting how to say the word no. I reminded her of how to say it and sent her to her room for a little break. Don't think she will stay there, stubborn little thing, so while she is on her rest time ( AMY...get back in there!) I will share my Sew and Tell for this week!!!!!

I was able to accomplish my View Master block and tutorial

And my New York Beauty Block number 4

Can't wait to see all the great stuff you guys are working on too!!!!!  Have a great weekend and thank you for sharing!

sew & tell v3.22 - a first for summer

Hello Friday and Welcome to Sew & Tell!  I haven't finished anything particularly new or exciting this week but my friend Summer has!!  She completed her first 2 quilts and did such an awesome job I asked her to come share them today!

Summer is one of those bubbly, fun, genuine people that you want to be friends with.  And she's super talented to boot.  She paints, and draws, and quilts and works with paper - she's amazing!  You'll have a lot of fun discovering her blog!

I'm going to start closing comments on guest sew & tell posts so you can head straight over to the guest's blog to leave some comment love!

*****
Hey there! I'm Summer of Artfulife. Amy was sweet enough to ask me to share my first quilts I've ever made on her blog for sew & tell.

Amy & I have been bloggy friends for a few years now & I'm so happy I finally had the chance to meet her this past year at the Sewing Summit. She is as awesome in "real life" as she is on her blog. Amy is actually on my list of people that inspired me to start quilting in the first place.

I come from a background of art. I attended Ringling School of Art & Design where I majored in Fine Art Painting with a minor in Printmaking. I always loved sewing & fabric but never really felt that quilting was something I could do. Amy was one of people that made me feel I could do it. Thanks Amy for paving the way! I'm now totally hooked!

Thanks Summer!  One of the things she failed to mention was that not only were these her first quilts, but she designed them herself!  If I remember correctly she got the scottie dog blocks from a friend and was asked to turn them into quilts.  She did a remarkable job!  You want to go see them now don't you?!

I purposely only showed a teaser shot so you can head over and see the rest of the pictures! And leave her your comments there!

Here's a few more posts to see some of her awesome work:
Granny Squares
Christmas Table Runners
Tooth Fairy Pillow Tutorial (you may remember these from a previous sew & tell)
Owl Mini Quilt (YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!! CUTE OVERLOAD!)

sew & tell v3.19: scrappy fish quilt

Hi sew & tell-ers!  I have a fun treat of a guest today.  I met Leigh through my current Quilting Bee - Bee Tweet.  I was able to meet her in person last summer when I went to Utah.  She's a great friend and amazing quilter.  I hope you take a minute to check out her blog at Leedle Deedle Quilts.

*****
Hi everyone! So I joined the Scrap Attack Quilt Along hosted by Rachel of Stitched in Color. Truthfully I had other ideas for my scrap quilt, and I still may try to execute those plans, but for now - this quilt turned out exactly how wanted it to.

I made it for my sister's new baby boy in colors that I thought my sister would love.

For the quilting I just did a curvy/straight line (is there a name for that?) with my new walking foot. I have a Brother sewing machine and I've never had good luck with the walking foot it came with. Kati had the same problem and started using a generic walking foot and had much better luck. I bought a new generic one and I'm happy to report that my straight quilting is the best I've ever done. If you've had trouble with straight line quilting, I'd look into getting a new/different walking foot.

You can see more about this quilt on my original post.

Thank you Leigh! I love orange and blue together for little boys! And this is such a fun modern design.

sew & tell v3.18: a tooth fairy pillow

Hey friends!  I hope you have all had a great week!  It's been super busy over here!  I was so excited to entertain my fun friend Karen I met blogging several years ago.  She traveled here to pick up her husband who was coming home from a deployment to Afghanistan.  It's a long fun story about how we met, and in short, I was reminded of the blessings of sweet friends that we may find in unexpected places.

So, I didn't get any sewing in.  But my fun friend Summer of Artfulife has been busy making these adorable tooth fairy pillows!
I love how she fussy cut this darling fabric to make this sweet little pillow.  She has the story of her own childhood tooth fairy pillow as well as a tutorial to make your own.  Go check it out!

And as a side note, Summer and I met online a few years ago.  Somehow she and my friend Karen that I mentioned earlier got to be friends on facebook.  Then the three of us plus another friend (that none of us has met in person yet) started up a little photography project blog (that's on hiatus currently - but maybe not for long!) and I just feel so lucky to know these ladies.   I am strongly reminded often of the blessings of like-minded friends and kindred spirits and I thank you all for being here!

I should have some finishes to share next week.  I'm so close to finishing up several things!

{amylouwho} sew & tell v3.12 - a Christmas quilt

*****There were some issues with the pictures! I think it's fixed now!*****

Happy Friday!
I'm really excited to have Rene' guest post sew & tell today!

She has been linking up to sew & tell since nearly the beginning!  She's always been so supportive, participating regularly and visiting/commenting everywhere and really catching the spirit of the linky party!

I'm going to let her take it from here!
*****
Hello and welcome to Sew and Tell Friday!  Rene' from Rene' Creates here, and I am so thrilled to be hosting this week's link party.  Thank you Amy for welcoming me as a guest blogger!  To commemorate my first guest blog post ever, I chose to make my first ever Christmas quilt!

Christmas Shoofly Quilt
I followed Malka's supersize shoofly quilt pattern which has precise cutting and sewing instructions.  This quilt came together much quicker than the No Worries shoofly quilt I recently made.  The four Christmas prints used are Michael Miller Tree Trimmers, Michael Miller Folk Art Trees, Robert Kaufman O' Tinsel Tree and Robert Kaufman Groove.  The neutral fabric used for the background is from a bolt of Moda I had in my stash.

As you can see there are various quilting designs going on here.  I am determined to if not master, at least improve, my FMQ skills!  My plan was to quilt each quadrant densely yet differently.  However, when it came time to quilt, my machine had other ideas.
IMG_2684

First, I stippled the center diamond area which worked fine.
IMG_2687

Feeling confident, I tried my hand at pebble quilting the Groove (dots fabric) quadrant.  That's when my machine rebelled.  Towards the end, my "pebbles" were getting larger and larger with more and more space in between just to finish and be done with it ;-)
IMG_2685

I switched back to my walking foot and used that to quilt a spiral in the Tree Trimmers (peppermint fabric) section.  Let me tell you it was very difficult maneuvering (basically swirling) this size quilt on my machine.  I was very glad to finish the spiral.
IMG_2688

For the O' Tinsel Tree (pink fabric) area, I again used my walking foot and echo quilted around the center of the block.  This looked boring so I randomly quilted lines and blocks in the center square.
IMG_2686

Getting tired of using my walking foot, I switched back to FMQing and quilted loops for the Folk Art Trees (green fabric).
IMG_2689

Since I stippled the center diamond, I also chose to stipple the triangular neutral areas on the top and bottom, whereas a walking foot was used to quilt organic lines in the four neutral corners.
IMG_2681

I chose to use two different neutrals for the backing because I wanted to keep it simple and highlight the quilting.  I did have a hard time photographing that neutral background though.  For the binding, I went with the Robert Kaufman Groove dot fabric and Amanda Jean's machine binding tutorial.
IMG_2718

Well, thanks again Amy for letting visit and share my Christmas quilt with you and your readers!

{amylouwho} sew & tell v3.11

Happy Friday everyone!

I'm happy to have a long time sew & tell-er guest posting today!  KT has been linking along with sew & tell from the beginning!  She always has fun projects to share and was sweet enough to still do this today even though she's been sick!  So without further ado....

*****
Hi and welcome to Sew & Tell Friday.  I am KT from ktquilts4fun.  I was so excited when Amy asked little old me to guest post.  Truly I had planned to have a little something fun and Christmas-y to share with you.
They were all cut out and ready to roll, but my life since Thanksgiving would read like something out of "A Series of Unfortunate Events".  Nothing horrible mind you, just...unfortunate!  I have had a nasty sinus infection since Saturday.  No big deal, just spent my time in the recliner finishing the binding on Treasure's quilt.
I used Tula Pink's Neptune line that I had been hoarding and swapping.  The pattern is from the Kaleidoscope Quilt A Long that was over some time ago.  What a disappointment when they stretched and bulls-eyed when I sewed them together.  I kept moving on, because life is never perfect!
I have to say that the quilting stumped me for awhile.  One night, when I was up way past my bedtime, it just came to me.  I am really happy with it.  The walking foot was employed for the squares made where the corners of the blocks come together.  Then I just did some loopy FMQ in the background pieces.  It is far from perfect, but better than my FMQ used to be!
I just couldn't bear to part with scraps that I had hoarded so carefully.  The back is composed of the end cuts from cutting the front pieces.  They are terribly imperfect.  That works for me with this quilt!
Treasure knew all about the quilt, it was kinda hard to hide!  So I already gave it to him.  It has only had one wash and is still linty.  It needs several more to get that cool, soft quilt feel.  This scarf, however will be a complete surprise to him.  Being Merino wool it is sure to keep him toasty!
Well, That is all I have to share.  Oh, the last unfortunate event, stomach flu has come for a visit.  Aren't you all glad that germs can't be transmitted through the net!  I am!  That means we can visit all the other Friday Finishes risk free!!
Thanks again Amy for letting me visit here!
Blessings,
KT

Thank you so much KT! It really helps keep sew & tell rolling along to have others come and guest post!  I love your projects! That neptune fabric and your quilt pattern are gorgeous!

If you are interested in winning a couple of cool prizes I have not one, but TWO giveaways going on right now. They both end Sunday at midnight.
Now, join in the fun and show us what you accomplished this week!

{amylouwho) sew & tell v3.6

Hi everyone! Sara from Sew Sweetness here with you today! Thanks to everyone who entered my bag giveaway here this past week, it was great to read about all your WIP's, and very nice to look at all those sweet comments! :-)

So, having recently moved, I haven't produced a whole lot of projects lately. Life gets in the way of sewing sometimes. ;-) Also, I have a few projects that I can't reveal yet (boo!!), so while it looks like I'm not up to much, believe me, the sewing machine has been a-whirrin' away every night. ;-)

Right now, I'm working on the Taffy Blouse, pictured above, from the new Colette Sewing Handbook by Sarai Mitnick. Seriously, I love her clothing patterns; I have just about all of them ::blush:: I doodle her name in my diary at night (just kidding). So, I decided to make the Taffy Blouse from the book first, because I thought I would like to wear it for Thanksgiving. I bought this sheer purple polka dot fabric at Joann's today (pictured below). If you know me, then you'll know that I cannot pass on a polka dot for any reason. In the photograph from the book above, you can see the model with a black-and-white striped bias tape on the sleeves and neckline; I wanted to do something cool like that, but I didn't really have anything on hand...is the solid purple too boring for the bias tape??

Sewing with sheer fabric is definitely an experience...it took me an hour just to cut out 4 pieces (front, back, and two sleeves). As a sewer, I might be getting spoiled by the quilting side in me. ;-) I'm hoping to finish the top tonight, so I'll let you know how it goes.

Soo...I did finish something up this week to share. I finished writing a sewing tutorial for this bag over the weekend, and here it is in all its pink glory:

The tutorial will also be accompanied by a step-by-step web video on how to make the bag. Unfortunately, the video is not ready yet (I'm shy), but as soon as I get an acting coach and finish it, you'll be the first to know. :-)

I'm also working on some blocks for the '12 Days of Christmas' Sampler Quilt Along that just started this week...like my Santa?

And now, without further ado, show me whatcha got...what did you finish this week?!

sew & tell: v3.3 ~ from kim

Happy Friday!!!  I am Kim from My Go Go Life. Amy is off at Sewing Summit and since I may be the only person in sewing bloggerworld to not be going, she very kindly asked me to guest host the Friday Sew and Tell. Thank you Amy! I hope you have an amazing time!

This week I was able to complete a couple of pillows for my sofa in the living room. I used some echino I have been hoarding, gray linen from Ikea, Kona and Amy Butler.  I love the one with the birds the most!

I made the pillows to go along with the surprise birthday quilt that Sara @Sew Sweetness organized with Amy and some other friends of mine. Too sweet!  The quilt is very inspirational and super LOVED.  I think this is my new happy place :o)

Cannot wait to see everyone's projects this week!!!!!

Please follow the guidelines as spaces are limited - linky will close after the first 30 entries. I will try to monitor the links to make sure everyone linking up is playing nice.  :)

sew & tell - sew sweetness

I was hoping to share my mock up top from my ball gown but yesterday was a lot of drama with the little people at my house and I  haven't gotten to the sleeves yet.  I've been posting pictures on my facebook page if you are interested.  I really like the way the ruffle looks!

So instead of me...

I'm so excited to feature Sara of Sew Sweetness today! Not just because she's super-talented, but there's a great story behind how we 'met'.  Remember my friend Kim (who doesn't blog) who I met at Costco and gave me all the awesome Heather Ross fabric?  Well - she and Sara are cloth diaper exchange friends and Kim suggested Sara and I become friends on facebook! She has just recently started blogging and does great pattern reviews.  And every Thursday from now until Christmas she announces a new pattern giveaway for the week!  Go check out this week's Amy Butler pattern giveaway!

One of her first sew & tell posts was this awesome dress she made for the Amy Butler challenge.
Then a few weeks later she decided to make her first quilt from the fabrics in her unfinished project drawer.  Here's a sneak peek at the loveliness:

And this week she is sharing this lovely bag:
Which was inspired by another sew & teller! Go read about it and see if it was you!

Thanks Sara, for being such an awesome addition to our sew & tell community!

There is a slight change to the linking rules about your own tutorials - please read!

sew & tell - quiltstory

edited to add:  Finishes today can be from the last two weeks because of Blogger's Quilt Festival last week.  Thanks for the reminder Leslie!

It's been another week with no finishes for me. I have started working on a dress to wear to the Marine Corps Birthday Ball in a couple of weeks. I'll be able to show that to you soon.
So today I'm excited to share a beautiful finish from a fellow sew & teller!

Fresh Poppy Design

The brain child of sisters Heather and Megan of Fresh Poppy Designs is a fairly new blog called Quilt Story.  Have you heard of it?  They've been participants in Sew & Tell in the past and have created this new blog aptly titled.  In their own words:
"Every quilt has a story behind them, and we really wanted to take the time to share what was put into each quilt. I have realized now more than ever that most quilts have a lot of love put into them. They are made for friends, they are made for babies. They are made to comfort. They are made to hold someone who is sick.  Each quilt really has something to tell and that is what we are doing at Quiltstory. We take submissions from everyone and would love more quilts to feature."
Like I said, what a great idea!  Behind every quilt is a great story!
Heather has a finish this week of her first quilt free-motion quilted by herself!  This inspires me since I am free-motion quilting my bird quilt by myself.  For the first time.  It's scary!

I love her rationalization for her new sewing machine, I'm going to have to try that out too.  You'll have to go over to her post to read about this gorgeous quilt!

sew & tell - pin.sew.press.

I just got back from a little trip to go to my high school reunion.  I was able to spend a few extra days hanging out with friends I moved away from earlier this year and we had a blast!  I saw my generous sewing friend Kim and got to use her awesome Bernina to start quilting my BIRD QUILT.  I KNOW! Did you think I'd forgot about it?  I'm trying to finish it for next Friday!
Amy's Creative Side - Blogger's Quilt Festival
Because of Amy's awesome Festival, we won't have our regular sew & tell next week.  I encourage all of you to pull out a quilt and blog about it to enter into the festival.  Click on the button above to read more about it.  Our regular sew & tell will resume on November 5th and you will be able to post 2 weeks worth of finishes!  Sound good?

Because I didn't actually finish anything this week, I asked a sew & teller to lend me a picture.  I think I'm going to be doing this more often.  I have some bigger projects I'm going to be working on and I'm feeling the stress of having to have something to post EVERY week.  I'm not superwoman, by any means.  Plus it's all of you who make this so fun!  I think it will be fun to feature you guys!  Let me know if you need some extra motivation to finish something and I can give you a Friday here on the 'front page'.

I'm sure if you've been following us here at sew & tell, you've seen the lovely work of Mary at Pin.Sew.Press.  She made that awesome ruffled bag for the Amy Butler Extravaganza.  Well just look at what she finished this week.
The Nigella Bag
picture courtesy of Mary. Click on the pic to go to her Flickr.

I KNOW!!! And more Amy Butler.  I have this fabric in a different colorway, and now I need to get THAT project done too.

Mary will tell you more about this gorgeousness in her own post.  Please go leave her some comment love.
